Medical Transcription is a highly specialized field and is perfect for part time work, or even better, a great job to do from home.

​​I have read numerous articles stating that Medical Transcriptionists are dying out because of the advances in technology, but at this time I don't agree.  

There may be fewer transcriptionists working in medical facilities, this is because they are now being employed as sub contractors from home.

What Do Medical Transcribers Do?

Medical Transcription (MT), is a position within the health industry dealing with the listening, interpreting and typing of audio medical reports dictated by a range of health service providers.

To put it simply they listen to audio files from doctors, nurses and other providers, then transcribe those files into typed notes/letters for inclusion in the patients files.

How To Become A Medical Transcriptionist 

1. Firstly you will need to enrol in an accredited medical transcription course.  

2. Now, you will need to join a professional association, the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) is a great association to join.

3. Contact local medical facilities in your area to ask for experience.  This can lead to work, when you have build trust with the facility.

4.  Finally become certified.  A certified medical transcriptionist will stand out in the job market.

Qualifications Required To Work In The Medical Transcription Field

You can become a Medical Transcriptionist in a number of ways, through work experience, education and certification.

Work Experience

A number of medical facilities use former nurses, medical secretaries or other health professionals.

They are skilled in medical jargon and have on the job experience which can assist them understand what they are transcribing.


There are numerous education paths to take when learning the skill of transcribing.

You will need to attend training which includes anatomy and medical terminology.  These educational facilities are all accredited.

Career Step offer a number of courses including a medical transcription course.

During the course you will be working directly with hiring companies, giving you that edge when you qualify.

US Career Institute offer online courses, allowing you to work at your own speed.

Penn Foster College offer learn as you go course from home.


To become more competitive in the job market, graduates can apply for an optional medical transcription certificate.  

Certification is awarded to medical transcriptionists that can demonstrate their expertise in medical transcription.  

The AHDI awards two types of certification:

Registered Medical Transcriptionist (RMT) 

This certification is aimed at recent graduates of training programs, or those with less than two years of work experience.

You will be required to complete an exam consisting of 130 multiple choice and audio transcription questions to gain certification.

Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT) ​

The CMT certification is aimed at medical transcriptionist with at least two years of work experience in a medical transcription field.

You will be required to complete an exam covering all aspects of medical transcription.

Skills Required To Become A Medical Transcriptionist

There are a variety of skills Medical transcriptionists require to become successful.  

Typing quickly is just one of them.  

You need to be a precise, accurate and have an excellent understanding of grammar and punctuation.

You will also need to be able to work under pressure due to the tight deadlines in the medical industry.  

If you intend to work from home, you will also need to have a computer, high speed internet, a headset and a foot pedal.

Medical Transcriptionist Salary? 

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics a Medical Transcriptionist salary is approximately $35,000 in 2018.

Is Medical Transcription A Good Work From Home Job?

If you have experience in medical transcription, this is a great way to make money from home.  

Medical Transcribers can choose their own hours and have a certain amount of flexiblility.  

The majority of companies want their transcribers to transcribe a certain number of words daily but then when that is complete, your time is your own.

There are numerous companies looking to hire medical transcriptionists to work from home.  


Is a highly successful company outsourcing transcription services to their clients in North America and Europe.

They hire their transcriptionists to work from their own home.  Payment is received through PayPal weekly.

To apply for a role with Athreon you must provide certification from a transcription training program, or have 2 years’ relevant work experience as a transcriptionist.

Eight Crossings

Is based in California, they are constantly recruiting for positions at their office in Sacramento and offer nationwide opportunities too.

Home based positions are available and require you to be able to process 1,000 lines per day.

Medical Transcriptionists need a minimum of two years experience in the medical transcription field and graduates may be considered.

Precision Transcription

Offering flexible shifts to medical transcribers based in the US or Canada.

You will require recent acute care experience and either eScription/Editscript and /or EMDAT experience.

Absolute Transcription

Offer Medical Transcribers with at least 3 years of clinic or acute care experience, flexible work from home.

You will be required to pass a test and have indepth knowledge and understanding of medical terminology.

Absolute Transcription state you must meet their 24 hour turn around timeframe and 12,000 lines must be transcribed for a full time role.

You also must have your own computer and foot pedal and experience with FTP software and Express Scribe Software.
